Blue boats by the shore
A remarkable and very special abstract coastal oil from 1948. Two wooden blue boats by the shore, in a wonderful gold vintage frame. It is the work of Austrian/ Swedish painter and graphic designer Felix Walter Hatz, who was born in 1904 in Vienna and died in 1999 in Stockholm. He studies at the Academy of Arts in Stockholm and under Axel Jorgensen at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen (1934).
Felix Hatz’s early painting - expressive landscapes, still life’s and cityscapes - were heavily influenced by Edvard Muhc. In 1944, Hatz moved to Sondrum, a small stonemason and fishing society, just north of Halmstad in Southern Sweden: it was here, as part of the so called ‘Sondrum colony’ of artists, that Hatz painted many of his most important works. This painting came from that period.
During the 1950s, Hatz’s work became increasingly abstract. Hatz is represented at the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Malmo Museum, Ystad and Gavle Museum, Gothenburg Art Museum and the National Gallery in Oslo.
