It is the work of an American artist called Jean Kalisch who was born in Japan in 1912. In the 1950s she moved to California with her husband and there she showed her work in some of the leading galleries of the mid 20th century. She exhibited at the San Francisco Museum, the Crocker Museum in Sacramento, Rosicrucian Museum in San Jose, Richmond Art Centre and De Young Museum of San Francisco. Known as a Cubist, critics have called Kalisch ‘a representationalist with a vivid imagination’ and characterised her work as ‘an ingenious combination of Cubism and Impressionism’.
